Thank you for returning to my ever so riveting blog!
I am going to write a little about something I have not talked about very much on here, mostly because I am paranoid beyond belief...
I... am from West Michigan! (Dun dun dunnnnn!)
(Pardon me while I look suspiciously from side-to-side.)
See I have this fear that if I talk about where I am from one of my overly obsessive fans will come hunt me down.
(Yeah, because I have overly obsessive fans...?)
I know, you think I'm joking, but I actually am paranoid about putting this type of information on-line for everyone to see.
I think all those after school specials have gotten to me...
I am originally from Queens, New York, and I'd like to think I'm a city girl at heart, but I must admit West Michigan, oh, how I have fallen in love, especially in recent years; I am really learning to appreciate this place.
I live in a town where unemployment is high, but potential is even higher. Everyday I find a new locally owned business, a new piece of artwork or sculpture, and I find something beautiful about this town I did not even know existed before.
Weird, what does this have to do with me or cupcakes?
I am up and coming, just like the town I live in.
I'm motivated, energetic, and aspiring.
This past weekend I received quite the opportunity, I was scheduled to make cupcakes for an event at the Frauenthal Center for Performing Arts. For any of you unfamiliar with this area of downtown, the Frauenthal is like a beacon of light for this place. It has been around since 1929, originally under the name Michigan Theater.
The Frauenthal hosts various forms of entertainment: symphonies, choirs, musicals, movies, etc...
It is an absolute gem in a town filled with deserted buildings and foreclosure signs.
But like I said: up and coming, UP AND COMING!
It's not hard to find exciting new places downtown, like the new culinary school or Mia & Grace, a fantastic little bistro with amazing cuisine!
And I'm excited.
Why?
Because I feel like I am a part of this "up and coming" thing.
I remember in high school, everyone dying to get out of this town.
But I think it's because we never knew what this town was capable of; we had no idea what was in store.
So today's blog is short and sweet, like a mini cupcake!
Word to the wise,
go out and find something
new in your own backyard:
a restaurant, a boutique, a farmer's market, a piece of artwork, a garden, or maybe a sunset you just never noticed before.
Odds are someone in your hometown is desperate to fight back at this economy and make your home the new "up and coming" place to be, and you should be a part of it.

ReplyDeleteIt's a different spin, but I like reading about the potential you are finding in west michigan.
ReplyDeleteI actually have an entry where the message is how i've tried so hard to get out of muskegon and move on to "bigger and better" things, but i find myself looking back wondering why I wanted to get out of there so badly...because I truly love that place and it's for the reasons you described.
Love it. This is so an "up and coming" town. Yet another excellent post Paula!
ReplyDeleteGood post Paula, I especially like how you're flirting with Mr Hackley!
ReplyDeleteI love Muskegon and West Michigan, and I grew up in Chicago. My children call Muskegon their childhood home and I know that no matter where they roam in their adult lives, they will return in some capacity to add value to this beautiful part of America...a magnetic field of diversity, dynamics, nature, nurture, and God.
peace in our town,
~L
